Are heroes born or made [A discussion to develop strength in character]

Are heroes born or made [A discussion to develop strength in character]

I am confused…
Heroes are born or made ?

I suppose, no one in the World is born a Hero

And to become a hero, there’s a journey that the person has to travel
This journey is long and difficult…

There are a lot of set backs & rejections in the way…
But, may be these hardships are a way that prepares a normal person to become a HERO

The rejections, setbacks & sabotages change the personality of that person – in a positive way or negative way

Some examples :

Lord Krishna

Lord Krishna was born in a prison, his own maternal uncle wanted to murder him after birth. He was raised by his foster mother. Had to change his staying place multiple times. That did not stop him from becoming a great strategist & philosopher

Pandavas

Pandavas, the 5 brothers of the epic, Mahabharata. They were deprived of their Kingdom & wealth. Their wife had to face severe humiliation & insult. They were sent to exile (Vanvas and Agyatavas) for 13 yrs. Staying away from home & fighting it daily out to survive for 13 long years. But the incidences made them stronger. Any weak hearted person would have gone into depression. But they utilized the time. They made alliances, designed strategies & finally retaliated to win back what they deserved.

Karna

Karna, one of the controversial characters of the epic, Mahabharata. He was born to Kunti before her marriage & hence was rejected by the society. But he did not get into a shell & shy away. He faced the consequences with might. Though he took the support of the negative powers ( which made him a villain), but his might is unquestionable.

Lord Ramchandra

Lankeswar Ravana, disguised as a Sadhu, kidnapped Sita. Lord Ram could have lost his mind & retaliated immediately. Instead, in the hour of crisis, he kept his cool. He formed alliance with Vanar senas. Took the help of Hanuman who was intelligent & had extra-ordinary powers. As a team, they strategized & finally attacked Lanka and rescued Sita.

Coming to modern age example…

Vivekananda

Born in a middle class Bengali family. Who thought that he would represent India & the Hindu religion in such a massive way at the Parliament of religions ?
Vivekananda lost his father at the age of 21 and the family came under severe financial crisis. He further faced another crisis when he lost his guru, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa. Many devotees of Sri Ramakrishna stopped coming and supporting the young monks. He, along with his monk brothers, had to struggle for living. They had to beg everyday for living. When Vivekananda travelled to Chicago, he did not have money to arrange for an accommodation. So, he stayed in a wooden box to save himself from the immense cold. He expressed his intentions to represent at the Parliament of Religions. But he did not have the credentials from a bona fide organization to participate. Finally, he made his way & the rest part of his life is a history.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose

Netaji was not in favor of Dominion Status. He wanted Complete Independence of India. Since he went against Gandhi’s opinion on Dominion status, he had to resign from Congress. Subhas Chandra Bose was isolated-he had more enemies than friends in the Congress Party.
But, he had his aim clear – freedom of the mother land. Neither he apologized to Gandhi , nor he backed out from fulfilling his dream of complete independence.
Netaji formed Indian National Army, which played a decisive role in ousting the British.
He was betrayed by his own men in Congress & Azad Hind Govt. He was rusticated from Presidency College for protesting against British Professor. He was jailed 11 times and subjected to immense torture. But, nothing could break his grit and determination. He made his way despite all the odds.

Diego Maradona

A shy boy born in a poor family. His father worked in a factory and his mother used to skip meals to feed her children. Extreme poverty & drug peddling was a common culture in his locality.
Maradona since childhood had huge talent in football. He joined Argentinos Juniors when he was aged 8. He was shorter but much muscular than other kids. Everyone accused him of being older. His technique & talent made the parents of other kids jealous. They expressed their hatred in every other way & Maradona was their enemy number 1. But Maradona knew his target well. The only target in his life was to score as many goals as possible. He was injured by his past, his poverty, his health, betrayals and what not. But he preferred to stand strong against all negatives with the positives he had. He focused all the energy on his strengths & a hero was made

Sourav Ganguly

World Cup 92 was one of the worst World Cup performances of the Indian cricket team. Sourav Ganguly made his debut in the World Cup ’92, scored 3 runs before he was run out. One bad performance for a 19-20 year old kid on such a big stage demands more chances. But, he was scrapped from the team for 4 years.
But, he made a tremendous come back in 1996. Scored 2 consecutive centuries on difficult conditions of England.
The dream start became sweeter when he built a young strong team & captained India to win against tougher oppositions.
Now started the Greg Chappell episode when he was dropped from the team. Like every human, he also had his positives & negatives. He worked on his positives. It was difficult for a 33 year+ old Ex-Captain to play in domestic circuit, prove his mettle & make a come back. But he was mentally prepared for a fight back. He let go of his egos. When Indian national team was playing against other teams, their Ex-Captain was fighting it out in the nearly empty stands of the stadium. When some one is so determined to challenge his destiny, the impossible also becomes possible. Ganguly also made his dream comeback, for the 2nd time.
The 3rd come back is as an administrator. Now, he is BCCI President. Who would have thought that a 19 year old Kid become the BCCI President after 28 years. Perhaps, he dared to dream big…

 Conclusion

Reasons why I am sharing these instances…
Everyone is struggling in some way or the other….

Being faint hearted is no option.
The difficulties should be considered as a great opportunity to become a hero
The rejections, the road blocks are a way to make us stronger.

I have experienced several setbacks in my life.
And my learning says, the only way to deal with it, is to face it.

Depression is like quicksand, it will drown you & make situations even worse.
There is absolutely no doubts that everyone in the above example were immensely talented.
We are no different…everyone of us also have some good qualities too.
Those positive sides of the character should be worked upon.
There is no point accusing anyone or cursing own destiny. That only takes the resolve and grit away from the target.
My conclusion…
A HERO is not made, the internal resolutions of a common man helps them to become Heroes.
And finally this journey under difficult, near impossible situations become inspirations for the generation to come.
The HERO journey is also a contagious one. One Hero gives birth to many more heroes in the times to come.
If you liked reading my write-up, please post your comments and do share with the ones who are struggling for a making come back….
My real reward would be, if, anyone successfully makes a comeback & my write-up contributes at least 1% in the journey.
